Obituary for Osvalds "Ozzy" Matiss

Matiss, Osvalds ( Ozzy )
February 26, 1935 – January 17, 2018
Passed away peacefully at home surrounded with love after a long battle with cancer. Survived by his wife Elspeth, celebrating 54 years of marriage, daughter Penny Harris ( John ) and son Thomas Matiss. Special Grand Pops to Madison, Jonathan and David. Dear brother of Astrida Andersons and brother-in-law to David Merrie ( Heddy ). Uncle to Linda Andersons-Reisner and Tessa and Arend Merrie. Born in Latvia, Ozzy survived Russian occupation and World War 2 and immigrated to Canada in 1950 where he worked in cotton mills in Hamilton and at Ford Motor Plant in Oakville for over 30 years. From the family in Burlington, Ozzy and Elspeth retired to Poplar Dale in 1994, building their dream home and legacy park. Known as an ornery old fool, always speaking his mind, he was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. Sincere thanks to family friends Wally and Norma MacLeod and Karen Corboy and Mike Jones. Thanks also to Dr Eric Haapala and team and the Thessalon Hospital nurses for their kindness and care. Special thank you to palliative nurse Jessica for her love and commitment. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Beggs Funeral Home, Thessalon on Saturday January 27, 2018 at 11am. Memorial donations to North Shore Health Network Auxiliary – Thessalon Site or the Cancer Society gratefully accepted.
